If you’ve driven your car at all over the last few months, you may have encountered some shockingly high numbers at the gas pump. I know I certainly have - take a peek at this bill I paid last month at a particularly pricey gas station in Brentwood!
While I don’t drive enough for these prices to be materially painful, it is still no fun to pay a bill of that size!
My thoughts immediately turned to electric vehicles (EV), which obviously don’t need to ever hit the gas pump. I realized, however, that I had no clue how much the electricity required to recharge an EV costs…
With that goal in mind, I set out to discover how much it costs to fully charge an EV across the United States. To do so, we assume that the average EV has a battery capacity of 75 kWh, a figure which was a good median between popular EVs like the Tesla Model 3, Polestar 2, Mustang Mach-e, and F-150 Lightning.
Findings
Using residential electricity cost data from the EIA, we show that it costs between $7 and $30 to fully charge an electric vehicle (75 kWh), varying substantially by state.
